History

After re – organisation of States, the State of Uttarakhand came in to existence. The first Bar Council of Uttarakhand evolved from the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh in 2004. Honorable justice Dharamveer Sharma was the first Chairmen of the Bar Council of Uttarakhand. The first election for 20 members of the Bar Council of Uttarakhand was held under supervision of the State Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. Again in the year 2009 the second term election for members of Council was held and the new members are elected.

The State Bar council of Uttarakhand is a very new one as compared to other State Bar Councils of the country. 5300 advocates were on the roll of Bar Council in 2004 on separation from Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh. Now approximately 10,000 advocates are on its rolls.

State Bar Council is the apex body of advocates in the state. Its main function are enrolment of fresh advocates, affiliation of District Bar Associations with in its jurisdiction, formation of disciplinary committees on complaints and to watch the welfare and problems of advocates, and ensurement of maintenance of norms of legal ethics and is to maintain cordial relation between the Bar and the Bench.
